One city. Seven hours. Eight bookstores.
Hachette Australia book rep Kathie took me on a tour of Brisbane’s bookstores. I was starstruck in Avid Reader in West End… it’s hard not to be as the staff are famous writers! Here I am with Chris Currie (The Ottoman Motel) and Krissy Kneen (Steeplechase)… and a really nice coffee. Chris said when his first novel was published not too long ago, it was very weird working in the store and watching customers buy it. I don’t know if I would have been able to stand that!
Angus and Robertson Brookside was the first bookshop we went to. Here I am with Lesley. They’ve sold out of my book a few times… lots of my friends shop here! Lesley created a great Easter book display and I bought a pretty gift for my daughter, Fancy Nancy’s Easter teaparty story book.
Stuart and I played barefoot bowls together at an Hachette publishing event not too long ago. It was nice to catch up, this time with our shoes on. As you can see, they treated me with a stylish signing table at Dymocks in the Queen Street mall. Very posh!
Poor Amecka had a horrible cold when we popped into Angus and Robertson on Adelaide Street. The staff had read Bay of Fires and wrote a nice review, which they displayed next to the book. I hope you’re feeling better in time for the Easter long weekend, Amecka!
I winged this interview! Meg created a video for the Author Recommends section of the Riverbend Books website. I had to reveal my favourite classic book, my favourite contemporary book, and what I’ve just finished reading. My answers: Tess of the D’Urbervilles, The Idea of Perfection, and Inheritance by Balli Kaur Jaswal – to find out why go to www.riverbendbooks.com.au. Kathie and I had lunch at Riverbend. We sat on the deck and had Moroccan lamb tortillas, juice and coffee. Such hard work doing bookshop tours!
Here I am with Karen at Books@Stones, a really lovely bookshop in Stones Corner. I noticed some cool stationery when I was there, so I will be paying them another visit soon! Karen organised an intimate bookclub style discussion for Bay of Fires. One of my neighbours, Renee, surprised me by turning up with her mum. Writers and bookclubbers take note: this is a great venue for book events.
